Summer Camp

During summer we have a special program for intensive training in a specialized topic. Our summer camp students train 3 hours a day, 5 days a week over 4 weeks.

The Short-Weapon Combat Summer Camp is about to launch this summer. Short-Weapon combat is a competitive discipline of traditional martial arts, originating from ancient Chinese swordsmanship. Throughout history, swords have been regarded as a symbol of Chinese martial arts, and swordsmanship and fencing are the essence of Chinese traditional sports, representing the cultural significance of the nation. Close combat is a continuation of this legacy, and its cultural significance is self-evident.

Originally named "fencing," short-weapon combat aimed to demonstrate the deep and profound cultural heritage of ancient Chinese swordsmanship. However, the short weapons in Chinese martial arts primarily consist of swords and knives, as well as whips, clubs, and others. Therefore, the design and rules of short-weapon combat had to consider the compatibility of techniques. As a result, after a period of time, this sport came to be commonly referred to as "short-weapon combat," a name that has been used ever since. Short-Weapon combat is a modern competitive combat sport with high safety, entertainment, and competitiveness. Its greatest characteristic is its distinct martial arts features, as most offensive and defensive techniques of martial arts swords can be executed and displayed using safe equipment and protective gear. Consequently, it is one of the best modern means to test the practicality of martial arts sword techniques.

Short-Weapon combat requires high technical proficiency and primarily focuses on techniques such as chopping, thrusting, shearing, pointing, collapsing, and sweeping, which are derived from ancient swordsmanship. In combat, it emphasizes winning through intelligence and skill, as any brute force or barbaric brawling only provides opportunities for opponents. The specific equipment performance and protective measures greatly enhance the safety of the competition while increasing the enjoyment of the sport. Through decades of sporadic practice, close combat has developed relatively mature rules, exhibiting strong stability and operability, making it a competitive combat sport suitable for both men and women.

Previous Summer Camps

In 2022 our summer camp theme is The Art of Boxing, focusing on boxing and self-defense. This class is inspired by the book The Art of War by Sun Tzu, written 2500 years ago. It has been recognized by the world and has been translated to many languages. The book is one of the great works of strategy. It represent a coherent approach to all forms of conflict, and the underlying principles can be applied in countless scenarios. It dives deep into the mathematical part of fights: calculating your opponents's strength compared to yours, strategizing how to use your environment to your advantage, disadvantages of the environment for you, and more. Using these calculations you can find the chance of winning against your opponent. In this program we will not only help you increase your strength in combat through boxing, but also teach you how to use math to increase your chance of winning. The Art of War includes 36 different strategies. We focus on 1 of the 36 strategies in each week.
